Samuel Woolbert, M.D., F.A.C.C.
Samuel Woolbert, M.D., F.A.C.C., is one of five interventional cardiologists at Legacy who specialize in percutaneous coronary revascularization, which reestablishes blood flow to the heart when its vessels have been damaged or blocked.
In 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008 and 2009 he was named to D Magazine's list of the "Best Doctors in Dallas." He was named as a "Texas Super Doctor" by Texas Monthly in 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008 and 2009. "Texas Super Doctors" are chosen through a poll of doctors and nurses across the state as well as through independent research.
He serves on a national panel of experts for the development of new therapeutic technology regarding angioplasty and stents and was one of the first cardiologists in the nation to treat patients using drug-eluting stents, which have been shown to reduce by 90 percent the common problem of arteries becoming blocked again because of reaction to regular metal stents. The stent slowly releases a drug coating that helps prevent scar tissue growth that can lead to reblockage.
Board-certified in internal medicine and cardiovascular diseases, Dr. Woolbert has served as the director of the cardiac catheterization lab and as chief of the cardiology section at the Medical Center of Plano where he also was on the special care and credentialing committees.
He is a member of the Texas Medical Association, the Collin County Medical Society, the American College of Cardiology and the American Medical Association. He also serves on the advisory board for Cordis Corporation, a company that has pioneered less invasive treatments for vascular disease.
He received a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry from Centenary College of Louisiana; his MD Degree from Louisiana State University Medical School; and served his internship and residency in internal medicine at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston. He also served as chief resident in internal medicine at Baylor College of Medicine and received his fellowship in interventional cardiology there as well.
